Nigeria Is A Permanent Failed State! (3)
Continuation of previous post ...
The Nigerian economy is so poor. Our currency is among the worst and weakest in Africa, and the entire world. African countries make mockery of Nigeria, especially when she flaunts herself as the giant of Africa-- a giant without strength and stream! Nigeria is a blind and clueless giant that is heading towards a precipice! Burkina Faso, under the visionary leadership of President (Captain) Ibrahim Traore, is developing infrastructurally at a staggering rate. Captain Ibrahim Traore is championing a cause for Pan-Africanism. Rwanda is experiencing good governance also. Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, and other African countries are ahead of Nigeria by a polar distance. Why? It is because of our flawed democracy and hybrid regime, which led to poor governance. Our petrol is too costly for us to buy. It is five times costlier than before. Electricity bill has increased five times more than what it was before the advent of Tinubu's government. The cost of transport is also soaring. Import duties are too high. The Naira (our local currency) can hardly buy one United States Dollar. The Naira to Dollar exchange rate is high. We buy just one United States Dollar with over two thousand naira (#2, 000) today.
The Government has put Value Added Tax (VAT) to everything in the market. Mobile phone recharge cards attract VAT. Bank transactions attract VAT. Bank rates are increasing daily. The cost of processing one international passport booklet has increased seven times. Today, five years duration Nigerian international passport booklet costs not less one hundred and seventy naira (#170, 000), while the ten years duration international passport booklet costs above three hundred and fifty thousand naira (#350, 000) respectively. Before President Tinubu's regime began, the cost of five years international passport booklet was not above forty thousand (#40, 000). Nigerians were crying and asking that Buhari Government should reduce the cost of the international passport. Unexpectedly, President Tinubu increased it without considering the feelings of the Nigerian citizens. Utility bills, petrol pump price and everything increased geometrically immediately he became the president of Nigeria. Candidly speaking, the most shocking action even taken by any Nigerian president is to increase petrol pump price under 30 minutes of being declared president by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Yes, some previous regimes (not all) used to increase petrol pump price. But, it used to take them a long time to deliberate on it before increasing it. In some cases, it took over two years before adding a little amount to it.
The Tinubu regime's approach to the fuel pump price increase was undemocratic, sinister, and exceedingly callous. It was not only announced under 30 minutes of his being declared president of Nigeria, it was increased by so much wide margin. The cost of feeding is so high for us today. Many people are dying due to hunger and malnutrition. Medical bills are so high too. Hence, children's and pregnant women's mortality rates are speedily on the rise. Prostitution has become the order of the day rather than exception for our women and young girls. Most women all over the world cannot live to watch their children crying of hunger. Nigeria is not different. Our women are presently lured into promiscuity as an alternative approach to earn a living to feed their hungry and dying children. But, I am not encouraging it! Things has never been so tight and miserable for Nigeria in history the way it is today. I do not think that we are near to the solution to this problem. Nigeria has entered into "a one chance" bus. The destination this administration is taking us to is not where we wanted to go. Who will come out to stop Nigeria from descending further into this slippery slope? Everything looks very bleak and gloomy here. The nation may be lost if no urgent rescue hand is available. Nigeria is a permanent failed State!
• Police Corruption:
Systemic underfunding has driven Nigerian police officers into the cesspool of corruption, extortion, and compromises in criminal cases. Prominent people use the police to do odd jobs and pay them princely amounts of money. Let me come out plainly, the Nigerian police is used as stand-by and ready-made weapons in the hands of the rich to kill and maim the poor innocent citizens. Nigerian police has a culture of giving arms, ammunition, and uniforms to armed robbers for monetary rewards after successful armed robbery operations. Not even the Government itself has faith in the police. In some cases, the police is underfunded. Hence, police officers buy their uniforms and funds operations from their pockets. The police has killed several innocent civilians of Nigeria for refusal to give them very small moneys at road blocks in the highways. They usually retire into poverty after decades of rendering risky services. The police is one of the greatest problems facing Nigeria. The Nigerian Police is one of the most dangerous and unreliable people in Nigeria. When the Federal Government allocates funds to the Police Force through the Inspector-General of Police for payment of salaries, purchase of arms and ammunition, uniforms, vehicles, building of police stations, police colleges, and training programmes, the Inspector-General can single-handedly or collaboratively with others lodge the budget into another private bank account to yield interest to them before pulling out the money for the purposes it was meant. For example, a one-time Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun committed this offence during President Olusegun Obasanjo's regime. He was shamefully dismissed from the Police Force. In fact, many heads of Federal Government of Nigeria's ministries, agencies, and departments, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Customs and Excise etc are allegedly said to be doing it till today. The budget may last in their accounts for two, three, four months. When this happens, the staff will be borrowing money from everywhere to survive. Before the salary is paid, they would have borrowed so much money. Once they pay their debts, they will be left with nothing. It happens across all sectors of Nigeria where salaries are paid. I mean it.
• Corruption In The Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN):
To the best of my knowledge, Nigeria is the most corrupt country under the Sun. Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, is confirmed to be the owner of a massive estate in Abuja Federal Capital Territory. This estate which contains 753 duplexes was acquired by illegal means. This estate, located at Lokogama District, Abuja, spans 150, 462. 86 square metres. Can you see that? Can this level of stealing take place in any other country? How on Earth can one man own 753 sprawling mansions? Godwin Emefiele was also accused of unauthorized foreign bank account belonging to him, fraudulent cash withdrawals, and manipulation of our naira (local currency) exchange rates. Specifically, £543.4 million British Pound Sterlings was allegedly lodged into fixed deposit accounts in UK banks. It is even strongly believed by many Nigerians that Godwin Emefiele still has other hidden stolen money lodged in other accounts unknown to the Federal Government.
Can this level of stealing take place in Ghana's Central Bank? Is there any Ghanaian Central Bank helmsman who can acquire 753 exotic duplexes? Can a Burkinabe Central Bank Governor steal £543.4 million British Pound Sterlings from Burkina Faso and still acquire 753 sprawling mansions? Can it happen in South Africa and Egypt? Will the Governments of Algeria, Libya and Rwanda accept such levels of theft? No, they cannot. Such things can only happen in Nigeria where most State Governors, Federal Ministers, and legislators were formerly international scammers and trained rogues. Every crime, no matter how heinous, can be committed in Nigeria, without anybody raising an eyebrow. If you have money to bribe both Government and police, you can kill 10, 000 innocent citizens and go uncensored and un-scathed. I am saying the full-orbed truth. I am not writing metaphorically or exaggerating. Nigeria is a permanent failed State!
In conclusion, Nigeria is a permanent failed State without any rescue in sight. Her democracy is flawed; and her hybrid regime is characterized by various democratic shortcomings. Until these issues are addressed, Nigeria's democracy will continue to struggle, and the country's development will be hindered lock, stock, and barrel. The nation is gasping for life. Our problems have defied all solutions. Our citizens are running out to different parts of the world to seek for greener pastures. Why can't we build our own country like those ones abroad? Do they have more in-ground mineral resources than us? How many countries of the world have more in-ground mineral resources and wealth than Nigeria? Unfortunately, with these spates of election rigging, lack of government accountability, weak rule of law, restricted civil liberties, massive corruption and stealing of national resources, manipulation and unfair electioneering conducts, limited political freedoms, Government's harassment, intimidation, and detention of opposition groups, excessive media censorship and aversion to freedom of speech and expression, Nigeria cannot be a successful democratic State to implement good governance. We need men like Captain Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso to rule Nigeria. If not, we will helplessly continue to grope in darkness and operate as a permanent failed State!
