Careers That Strain Marital Harmony
There are careers or professions that critically strain marital harmony due to factors like long hours of engagement, high stress, and emotiomal demands. Here are some high divorce rate careers (professions) that can be particularly challenging for marital relationships:
1. Army and paramilitary careers:
The term "paramilitary" refers to organizations or groups that operate in a military-like manner, often with a hierarchical structure and use of force, but are not officially part of a country's armed forces. These careers often require specialized training, discipline, and strict adherence to protocols, similar to military organizations. They include:
• Military personnels (soldiers and army officers, including naval and air personnels)
• Law enforcement agencies ( Police, National Drug Law Control Agencies etc.)
• Security forces (private security outfits and bodyguards)
• Emergency response teams (firefighters, emergency medical responders)
The Army and other segments of the paramilitary often undergo intense stress, long hours of work, and traumatic experiences that can affect their personal relationships. The constant exposure to danger and uncertainty of safety traditionally associated with these careers can lead to emotional detachment, making it challenging to maintain intimacy with their partners. Moreover, the lack of control over work schedules and frequent deployments can cause feelings of isolation and anxiety. Obviously, women whose husbands belong to the Army and other paramilitary sectors can attest to the truism that these careers make intimacy and communication with partners very difficult, leading to strained relationships, infidelity, and divorce. During warfares with enemy nations, the wives and parents of soldiers in particular, are restless in their hearts because they know their beloved husbands and sons are in the battlefields face-to-face with the enemy. If any partner dies in the battlefield the surviving wife starts life all over again with their little children. In some countries, like Nigeria, it will take decades for the wife of the late soldier to receive any monetary entitlement from the Army Headquarters to help the family of the fallen soldier forge ahead. Once the man dies in battle, a signal will be sent to the bereaved woman to quit the apartment in the barrack within a few months. The same rule obtains in the Navy, Air Force, Police etc, in Nigeria.
2. Radiological technologists:
Radiological technologists work in high-stress environment, often with limited control over their schedules. The physical and emotional demands of the job can lead to burnouts, affecting their relationships with their partners. Additionally, the constant exposure to radiation and other hazardous materials can create health concerns, adding to the stress and anxiety.
3. Traveling sales professionals:
Traveling salesman and saleswomen often spend extended periods away from their homes, leading to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection from their partners. The constant travel and lack of stability can disrupt routines and make it challenging to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Moreso, the rising pressure to meet sales target and the potential for infidelity can further exacerbate the relationship.
4. Coaching:
Coaching can be a demanding profession, requiring long hours of work, intense emotional investment, and a high level of physical and mental energy. Coaches often prioritize their athletes' needs and priorities over their personal relationships, leading to neglect and feelings of abandonment. The emotional demands of the job can also lead to burnouts, affecting the coach's ability to maintain a healthy relationship.
5. Massage therapist:
Massage therapists engage in services that require physical touch and intimacy with clients, including the opposite genders, which can most times blur boundaries and create emotional connections with clients more than partners left at home. This can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety, affecting the therapists' relationships with their partners. Not only that, the emotional demands of the job can lead to burnouts and compassion fatigue.
6. Entertainment industry careers:
This is one of the highest divorce rate career or profession. Careers in the entertainment industry, such as acting or music, can be highly demanding, energy-sapping, and unpredictable. The constant scrutiny, pressure to perform, and lack of stability can lead to stress, anxiety, and feelings of insecurity. The potential for infidelity and the constant attention from daring fans can also strain relationships.
7. High-stress careers or professions:
Careers or professions like piloting and flight attendance, daily inter-continental sea trips by ship captains and sailors, medicine, and emergency responses can be extremely stressful and demanding, leading to burnouts and emotional exhaustion. The long hours, days, and months, and even years, without seeing a partner can cause a disconnection and flawed intimacy, leading to feelings of isolation, loneliness, frustration, and resentment. I was once a ship chandler who transversed the Atlantic coastline with big speedboats supplying food items to the sailors in the high seas where the angry waves are boisterous and unfriendly. Once sailors get to the free zone and berth, their first priority is women. When the cheap naked women in the city get the wind of their arrival, they put on their skimpy and diaphanous (see-through) dresses and dash into the next available speedboats to the high seas. They defy the tossing strength of the proud waves and go in quest of men in the ships. The sailors are usually exceedingly glad to welcome them. While in the speedboat that ferried them to the high sea, they climb the swinging ladder thrown from the ship. As they enter the ship, the sailors will hurriedly scramble for them and take them to their cabins.
One thing that used to surprise me so much was that those young women climbed the oscillating and hanging ladders while wearing their high-heeled shoes. There was one case where one lady miscalculated her steps and fell into the ocean at the free zone in Bonny, Rivers State, Nigeria. She escaped death by the whiskers! So, ship captains and sailors often spend over one year before coming back home to meet their partners and children. Many times, they return home with deadly infections and transfer them to their unsuspecting wives. That is why regular-trip-demanding-careers and professions have high divorce rates.
In conclusion, certain careers or professions can indeed be challenging for marital relationships owing to factors like long hours of work, high stress, and emotional demands. By understanding these challenges and prioritizing communication, empathy, and support, couples can navigate the complexities of these career-related stressors and build a strong and more resilient relationships where happiness and harmony reign.
