Excessive Screen Time Drastically Kills Marriages

The advent of technology has revolutionized the way we live, work, study, and interact with each other. While technology has brought numerous benefits, it has also introduced new challenges in many aspects of human endeavours, including marriages. Technology addiction, characterized by excessive screen time, has become a significant threat to marital relationships. If left unchecked, it can lead to a decline in relationship quality, increased conflicts, and even divorce.

Technology addiction has an adverse effect on marriage by reducing quality time spent together. Couples who excessively use digital devices often find themselves in the same room, yet, they are emotionally and physically separated, disconnected, and operate at different frequencies under the same roof. The husband and wife are busy for several hours pressing their smartphones without knowing if a partner is in the room or not. If you look closely at the picture in this post, you can see a couple in the bed. The wife was still busy pressing her phone, while her husband had finished with his own phone and slept off with the phone placed on him. Technology addiction can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and disconnection. Research suggests that couples dealing with phone addiction are four times more likely to consider divorce than those without phone addiction.

Technology addiction can lead to decreased attention engagement in the relationship. When one partner is more focused on his/ her device or phone than spouse, it can foster feelings of neglect and emotional distancing. A study found that higher levels of smartphone use were associated with lower satisfaction and increased feelings of loneliness. Another significant impact of technology addiction on marriage is the potential for increased conflicts and jealousy. Social media, in particular, can trigger feelings of insecurity and jealousy, especially if one partner perceives that the other one is excessively interacting with others online. This can lead to suspicion, arguments, mistrust, and a decline in relationship quality.

Excessive screen time can also erode face-to-face communication and intimacy in marriages. When couples rely more on digital communication than face-to-face interactions, they miss out an essential nonverbal cues, such as body language and tone of voice. This can lead to misunderstanding, miscommunications, and conflicts. The phenomenon of "phubbing" or ignoring or neglecting one's partner in favour of mobile phones or digital devices, is another significant consequences of technology addiction in marriage. Phubbing can lead to feelings of neglect, rejection, and hurt, ultimately damaging the emotional connection between partners.

To mitigate the negative effects of technology use on marriage, couples can take several steps. Establishing "tech-free" zones and time at home can help couples reconnect and prioritize face-to-face interactions. Setting screen time limits and engaging in activities that promote intimacy and connection can also help. Ultimately, finding a healthy balance between technology use and relationship nurturing is crucial for maintaining a virile and fulfilling marriages.

In conclusion, technology addiction can have severe consequences for marriages, including reduced quality time, decreased attention span and engagement, increased conflicts and jealousy, and erosion of face-to-face communication and intimacy. By recognizing the risks and taking steps to mitigate them, couples can build stronger and more resilient marriages. Technology addiction should be mitigated. If not, couples will continue feeling like roommates in their own houses.
