Case For Christian State In Nigeria: Self-Determination Is The Only Antidote To Genocide
The relentless and age-long persecution and arbitrary killings of Christians in Nigeria has led to agitations and calls for a separate Christian State, where they can govern themselves and practise their faith freely. This demand for self-determination is undoubtedly rooted in the principle that ethnic nationalities and communities have the inalienable rights to protect themselves from organized systemic violence and marginalization. Historical examples have shown that self-governance can be a viable solution for persecuted and endangered groups of people like the Igbos in Nigeria.
In Nigeria, Christians face unprecedented widespread attacks, abductions, killings, burning of Churches with worshippers inside of them, rape, forced conversion to Islam, forced girl child marriages, and other atrocious actions, often with Governments' inactions. A Christian State can provide security and allow tribes and communities to manage their affairs according to their values. Here are some countries which achieved independence (self-determination) after protracted periods of oppression by other countries:
1. Israel (1948): Israel was established as a Jewish State in 1948 after the Holocaust.
2. Bangladesh (1971): She gained her independence from Pakistan after brutal conflicts.
3. South Sudan (2011): She seceded from Sudan after decades of civil war.
4. East Timor(2002): She gained her independence from Indonesia after 24 years of struggle.
5. Croatia (1991): Croatia gained her independence from Yugoslavia after ethnic conflicts.
6. Eritrea (1993): She seceded from Ethiopia after long struggle.
7. Slovakia (1993): It peacefully separated herself from Czech Republic to become a sovereign State.
8. Montenegro (2006): She gained her independence from Serbia.
9. Kosovo (2008): It was declared an independent State by Serbia.
10. Iceland (1944): It got her independence from Denmark.
11. India (1947): India became an independent country from British colonial rule in 1947.
12. Pakistan (1947): It gained independence from Britain and India.
13. Ghana (1957): She was the first sub-Saharan country to gain independence from colonial rule.
14. Algeria (1962): It gained independence from France after long struggle.
15. Singapore (1965): She got her independence from Malaysia.
16. Namibia (1990): She got her independence from South Africa.
17. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania (1991): They got their independence from Soviet Union respectively.
18. Slovenia (1991): She was given independence by Yugoslavia.
19. Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992): It got independence from Yugoslavia.
20. Palestine (1988/ 2012): Partially recognized in 1988 and 2012. Partially declared independent by Israel. Presently, it has not got recognition of an independent country.
21. Faroe Islands (1948/ 2005): It is not a full independent State. It is an autonomous territory under Denmark, with a strong movement for self-determination.
The concept of self-determination is recognized internationally, with the United Nations acknowledging the right of people to determine their political status. For example, for the arbitrarily killed Nigerian Christians, a separate State should mean escaping from persecutions and swords and building a society based on their own principles. However, the common challenges include defining borders, ensuring rights of minor tribes, and gaining international recognitions.
In conclusion, the case for a Christian State or States in Nigeria stems from the need for self-determination in the face of extreme persecutions and killings of Christians by radicalized Fulani jihadists and their mentors, including Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, the terrorism funder. While the issue is complex, historical precedents show clearly that self-governance can easily pave way for security and peace for marginalized and vulnerable tribes and communities. The Igbo tribe in the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria wants self-determination to avoid endless killings of Christians and burning of Churches, displacement of vulnerable population, kidnapping, rape, forced conversion to Islam, forcing kidnapped girls and married women to rounds of sex by bandits, forced girls marriages with bandits, and other atrocious activities by the extreme Fulani jihadists. We want our own country called Biafra!
