Self-Determination For Igbos: A Path To Peace, Prosperity, And Stability In Nigeria
Self-determination for Ndigbo could be a critical trajectory towards peace, prosperity, and stability in Nigeria. The Igbo people, predominantly Christians, have faced decades of unprecedented massive arbitrary killings, marginalization, existential threats, economic exclusions, kidnappings, rape, forced conversion to Islam, and political underrepresentations. Granting them autonomy or sovereignty could, without any doubt, critically alleviate tensions and allow Igbos to govern themselves, escaping vicious cycles of oppression.
Examples from across the world show emphatically that the concept of self-determination can lead to peace and stability. Kosovo's independence followed NATO's interventions to stop ethnic cleansing. East Timor gained her independence after UN's support and is now a thriving democracy. South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011 though obvious thorny challenges persist.
For the Igbos, self-determination could mean managing their resources, preserving cultures, and ensuring security. It could also peg down Nigeria's internal conflicts, particularly Christian genocide, which is the major cause of the secession agenda. The secession of Igbos from Nigeria will even enable other ethnic nationalities to compete for infrastructural development. The Igbo's entrepreneurial spirit and cultural heritage position them well for prosperity and technological advancement since there will be Government's incentives for research and development (R&D).
The Nigerian Government must address Igbo grievances head-on and ensure inclusivity and participatory governance. International support, chiefly from the UN and US, can rapidly facilitate this process. Self-determination is not a zero-sum game; it can pave way for regional stability and economic growth. By supporting Igbo's struggle for self-determination, Nigeria can take a significant step towards ensuring lasting peace and prosperity. The world must encourage dialogue and respect the Igbo people's right to determine their own future without intrusions by undesirable elements who hate them.
