The Rise Of Islamist Extremism In Nigeria: An Existential Threat To Christians And Democracy

The bourgeoning rise of Islamist extremism in Nigeria poses a significant threat to Christians and democratic rules. Radicalized Islamic groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, Lakurawa Jihadists, and Fulani herdsmen (Miyetti Allah Herdsmen Association supplies weapons to Fulani jihadists.) have perpetrated brutal attacks on Christians, burning of Churches, abducting worshippers, raping women, forced conversion to Islam, slaughtering of Christians, and displacement of vulnerable people. This violence is no longer a local issue; it has a far-reaching implications for global stability, security, and religious freedom.

Examples from across the world show the dangers of unchecked Islamist extremism. In Pakistan, for example, Christians like Asia Bibi faced blasphemy accusations and violence. In Iraq, ISIS brutally targeted Yazidis and Christians, displacing thousands. In Somalia, Al-Shabaab's attacks on Christians have become relentless and devastating. Nigeria's extremist groups share tactics with global terror networks, threatening regional stability and fledgeling democracies. The international community must act fast to prevent Nigeria from becoming a hub for Islamic extremism. The United States has designed Nigeria a "Country of Particular Concern" and conducted airstrikes against extremist hideouts in Nigeria, but more needs to be done to protect vulnerable Christians and promote tolerance and co-existence.

Democracy and religious freedoms are at risk in Nigeria. If extremism is not eradicated in Nigeria, it will embolden other groups, threatening global security, peace, and stability. It is imperative that the world acts fast to safeguard Christians from the clutches of death and ensure that democracy prevails.
