Christian Persecution In Nigeria: A Threat To Global Stability

Infallible reports from 2025 and early 2026 indicate that Nigeria has become one of the deadliest countries in the world to live in as a Christian, with persecution and genocide driven by extremist groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, Lakurawa Jihadists, and radicalized Fulani herdsmen. These atrocious activities against Christians take place mostly in the northern and Middle Belt regions of Nigeria such as Plateau and Benue States. Christian persecution in Nigeria poses a significant threat to global peace and stability. The country has undoubtedly become one of the most dangerous places for Christians, with about 850, 000 killed in the past 20 years, and over 5 million persons displaced within the same period in Plateau and Benue States. Over 6, 000 brainwashed extremist groups and Fulani jihadists drawn from 7 African countries (Libya, Senegal, Gambia, Chad, Mali, Niger Republic, and Nigeria) under the auspices of Miyetti Allah Herdsmen Association, by late President Muhammadu Buhari (the Fulani Satan in human form) in April 2014, and commissioned in Kaduna, perpetrated brutal attacks on Christians. These invasions led to arbitrary killings of innocent Christians, burning of Churches with worshippers trapped in them, abduction of worshippers and raping the women in the pristine forests for years, slaughtering and displacing vulnerable villagers.

This evidence is not a local issue or imaginary exaggeration, it has far-reaching global implications. Unchecked or unabated extremism can easily mutate into a daring monster that may be very difficult to tame, destabilizing West African countries and beyond. Nigeria's strategic location and teeming population make it a key player in regional security. When extremists target Christians, it obviously emboldens other groups, fueling a vicious circle of violence and intolerance.

The international community should act in a timely manner to prevent Nigeria from becoming a hub for global terrorism. The US has designated Nigeria a "Country of Particular Concern", and conducted airstrikes against extremists targets in the North-East and North-West geopolitical zones of Nigeria. However, more needs to be done to protect Christians and address the root of the violence.

Globally, stability and peace depend on protecting the rights of minority and preventing extremism in all its facets and appearances. If the Nigerian Christians are left vulnerable, it may embolden other faceless fundamentalist groups, threatening worldwide peace in its wake. The world should act fast to safeguard Christians in Nigeria and ensure global security. If the international community had read the handwriting on the wall and intervened swiftly in Rwanda and Kosovo respectively, the large population of people who died in the crises would have been saved. A stitch in time saves nine!
