How To Encourage Your Child To Love Learning

Fostering a love for learning in your child is one of the greatest legacies you can bequeath to your child. This is because it has a profound impact on that child's academic pursuits, personal growth, and overall wellbeing. It sets up that child for a lifetime of curiosity, creativity, and exploration. Find below some useful tips to foster a love for learning in your child:

1. Parents and caregivers should model a love for learning. According to Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory, Lev Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory, and John B. Watson and B. F. Skinner's Behaviorist Theory, children learn by observing and imitating their parents and caregivers. They learn through conditioning, interactions with environments and cultures, reinforcement and punishment. Since children mimic their parents and caregivers behaviours, it behooves them to model a love for learning so that the children can emulate them.

2. Parents and caregivers are advised to make learning fun by incorporating games, puzzles, and hands-on activities into the children's learning experiences. This can help the children make learning feel like play.

3. Encourage your child to show curiosity. Albert Einstein said that imagination is better than knowledge. Ask your child open-ended questions that encourages him/ her to think or reason critically and explore his/ her curiosity. Provide an opportunity for the child to ask questions based mostly on what he/ she has been taught presently.

4. Parents and caregivers should provide opportunities for exploration, invention, and discovery. Give your child a variety of experiences, such as visits to museums, parks, and zoos. These experiences can help spark his/ her interest in different subjects and topics of learning.

5. As a father, mother, or caregiver, you should praise your child's efforts, not just the achievement. Do not praise only your child's high grade or achievement. You should praise your child's efforts, interest, and persistence first. This goes a long way to helping that child develop a growth mindset and enjoy the learning process.

6. Parents and caregivers should create a supportive learning environment by providing a quiet, comfortable, and organized space for your child to study and learn. Minimize distractions and provide necessary resources, such as books, pencils, technology, and teachers.

7. Parents and caregivers should not be pissed off and begin to condemn the children when they make mistakes in the process of learning. Rather, they should view mistakes as opportunities for growth and learning and a scaffolding for attaining higher academic success.

8. All parents and caregivers are supposed to be completely involved in their children's education programmes. They should attend Parents Teachers Associations' conferences, volunteer to provide some social amenities to the schools, and participate in school events, such as Speech and Prize Giving Days, Interhouse Sports Competitions, and other epochal events annually. Showing interest in your children's education can help them feel more engaged and motivated.

9. Parents and caregivers should provide choices and autonomy to their children. Children should be offered choices, such as books to read and work on. The practice of providing autonomy can help make them feel more invested in their learning.

10. Make your child's learning more relevant and meaningful by connecting what they learnt in school to real-life situations. This can help them see the value and purpose of their education.

Illiterate parents and caregivers can also help their children love learning. They can show interest and encouragement by asking the child about the activities at school, and what they learnt during the day's lessons. Ask the child if he/ she understood what he/ she was taught or not. Tell the child to ask questions if the topic is not well understood by him/ her. Tell your child not to be ashamed of asking questions when he/ she does not properly understand a particular topic of a subject. Ensure that your child has a Time Table which covers the school syllabus. He/ she should be persuaded to use the Time Table to study and cover the whole syllabus. As a parent or caregiver, ensure that the child does his/ her school homework before going to school the next morning. Find out your child's best subjects and the subjects where he/ she is lagging behind. Endeavour to encourage the child to study harder! You can help the child by getting a home teacher to teach him/ her at home after school period. It is imperative that parents and caregivers know the friend (s) their children are associating with. If your child's friend or peer is the type that does not love learning, it will most likely influence your child negatively. Your efforts to make your child love learning may collapse like a card of dominoes if your child is associating with children who hate learning! Being an illiterate parent and caregiver does  not debar you from supporting your child's education programme. By showing interest, creating a supportive environment, and seeking help from professionals when needed, you can encourage your child to develop an unquenchable love for learning.

International agencies across the world have played significant roles in fostering a love for learning in the children. These organizations employ various strategies to make education inclusive, engaging, accessible, and enjoyable for kids. For example, the Childhood Education International develops innovative solutions to education challenges, ensuring that all children have equal access to quality learning opportunity. The LEGO Foundation promotes learning through play, providing opportunities for children to develop essential skills and a lifelong love for learning. The UNESCO works towards achieving quality education for all, recognizing its power to break cycles of poverty and promote peaceful societies.

By implementing these stated strategies above, parents and caregivers can foster a love for learning in their children, setting them up for a brilliant academic success, personal growth, and lifetime of exploration and discovery.

Please, kindly share with your friends and loved ones. Thank you very much.
