How Does Corporal Punishment Affect Child's Development & Self-confidence?

The bad habit of regular physical beatings of children (corporal punishment) is a widespread practice in many latitudes of the world. However, research has consistently shown that physical punishment to children can have a long-term negative impact on child's development and self-confidence. When children are physically beaten regularly with cruelty, they may experience increased anxiety, fear, and aggression, which can shape their worldview wrongly and influence their relationships with others. Excessive cruel beatings of erring children in the name of parenting may make them harden up their minds so that they begin to perpetrate vices wantonly without minding who is raising the eyebrows. An inhuman approach to parenting can make children plunge more into the cesspool of destruction because they feel that nobody loves them, truly. The impact of corporal punishment on children can be profound, affecting their emotional, social, and cognitive development, and ultimately, their self-confidence and future successes.

Physical regular beatings of erring children can impact on their emotional development, leading to increased anxiety, depression, and emotional dysregulation. Children who experience regular physical beatings or punishments may develop a negative self-image, feeling unworthy and unfit, unloved (hated), unlovable, which can affect self-esteem and confidence and future successes. For example, a study in the United States has found out that children who experienced physical beatings were more likely to develop mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. In South Africa, research has shown that physical punishments to children is associated with increased aggression, anger, and behavioral problems in children.

Physical beatings (corporal punishment) can also affect children's social development, influencing their relationships with others and their ability to form healthy attachment. Children who are subjected to corporal punishment may struggle with trust, intimacy, and communication problems, leading to difficulties in their personal and professional relationships. For example, a study in Canada showed that children who experienced physical punishments were more likely to have difficulties with peer relationships and social skills. In Sweden, research has shown that physical punishment is associated with increased risk of behavioral problems and mental health difficulties.

Corporal punishment can also impact a child's cognitive development, affecting his/ her academic performance and learning ability. Children who experience physical beatings may experience increased stress and anxiety levels, which can impede their abilities to learn and focus. For example, a study in Australia found out that children who experienced physical punishment were more likely to experience academic difficulties and behavioral problems. In Japan, research has shown that physical punishment is associated with decreased motivation and academic achievement. Examples of the negative impact of physical beatings on child's development and self-confidence can be seen in various cultures and countries across the world. In India, for example, the practice of physical punishment is commonplace in schools, despite efforts by authority to abolish it. Research shows that physical punishments can have untold negative impact on children's emotional and cognitive development instead of the intended abatement of their wrong behaviours. In Brazil, studies have shown that physical punishment is associated with increased aggression and behavioral problems in children. Children hide information from their parents who flog them from time to time. They do not want to tell their parents and caregivers those things which they did wrongly. If their parents and caregivers ask them if they were responsible for a particular offence, they will deny totally because of the consequences of saying the truth. Therefore, it means that the more children are brutally beaten up or dealt with for committing an offence, the more they hide information from their parents and caregivers in order to avoid being punished. In the same venation, we can assert that, the lesser children are subjected to corporal punishment for wrongdoings, the more confidence they have in their parents and caregivers, and the quicker they may tell them the truth when they are wrong since they know that they may be pardoned.

In conclusion, regular or excessive physical beatings (corporal punishment) can have long-term negative impact on child's development and self-confidence. The impact of physical beatings of delinquent children can be profound, affecting their emotional, social, and cognitive development, and ultimately, their future successes. By virtue of recognizing the negative impact of corporal punishment on child's development, and promoting positive discipline, parents, caregivers, and authority can help children develop healthy relationships, self-confidence, and a positive sense of selfworth. Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment that promotes healthy development and well-being.
