Role Of Video Games In Improving Child's Development

Without any iota of equivocation, video games have an integral part to play in modern child's development, and their impact on a child's development is a topic of ongoing debate. While some argue that video games are the surest means of hampering child's development, because they are harmful; others believe that they can have a positive impact on a child's cognitive, social, and emotional development. Research suggests that video games can have both positive and negative effects on children, depending on the type of game, the amount of time spent playing, and the individual child.

One outstanding benefit of video games is their ability to improve cognitive skills such as, problem-solving, decision-making, and multitasking skills. Games like Minecraft, Portal, and Tetris require players to think critically and strategically, which can help children develop these skills. Additionally, video games can enhance spatial awareness, visual processing, and hand -on coordination.

Video games can also have social benefits, such as promoting teamwork, communication, and social interactions. Multiplayer games like Fortnite, League of Legends, and Overwatch require players to work together, communicate effectively, and build relationships with their teammates. These skills can translate into real-life situations, such as working in teams or building friendships or long-term relationships.

Furthermore, video games can have emotional benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety, and promoting creativity and self-expression. Games like Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley, and The Sims allow players to express themselves creatively and build virtual words that reflect their personalities. Examples of video games that can have a positive impact on child's development include:

1. Minecraft:

It improves problem-solving skills, creativity, and spatial awareness.

2. Portal:

It enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and spatial reasoning skills.

3. Tetris:

It develops spatial awareness, visual processing, and hand-eye coordination.

4. Fortnite:

It promotes teamwork communication and social interactions.

Animal Crossing:

It encourages creativity, self-expression, and stress relief.

Every coin has two sides. Video games have both positive and negative impacts too. These include:

1. Addiction:

Spending excessive time playing games can lead to addiction, negatively affecting daily life, classroom activities, and responsibilities.

2. Violence and aggression:

Exposure to violent games can increase aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in children, teenagers, and adolescents.

 3. Social isolation:

Excessive screen time (gaming for several hours) can lead to social isolation, decreased physical activity, and reduced face-to-face interactions.

4. Sleep deficit patterns:

Playing games late into midnight (particularly where parents are not concerned about child's time management skills) can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to fatigue, decreased concentration, sleeping during classroom lessons, and other related health issues.

5. Eye strain and health issues:

Prolonged screen time causes eye strain, headaches, and other health issues.

6. Immoral behaviours:

Exposure to pornographic pictures and other obscene things can drastically reduce absorptive capacity in children's brains. It also leads to untimely sexual urges and immorality, thereby leading to dropping out from school or becoming a long-term liability to the family.

Some examples of potentially harmful games include:

1. Grand Theft Auto:

This is widely known for its violent content and nature. This is very harmful to child's development. Yet, innumerable parents and caregivers are still flagrantly allowing their children access to it.

3. Fortnite:

Though it is very popular, yet, excessive playtime can lead to addiction and social isolation.

Therefore, it is essential for parents and caregivers to be aware of these potential negative impacts and then help children practise responsible gaming habits. In conclusion, video games can have a positive impact on child's development and performance in various areas, including cognitive, social, and emotional development. Through video games, children can develop valuable skills such as, problem-solving skills, critical thinking and reasoning skills, and teamwork, that can benefit them in many areas of life. Having said that, parents and caregivers are strongly advised not to expose their children to those games which tend to impact negatively and destructively on their children.
