Interview Preparation: Likely Questions And Answers


 

To the job seeker, preparing for an interview can be a daunting task. But, familiarizing himself/ herself with the common likely interview questions and practising the answers can significantly boost the job seeker's confidence and chances of success. Interviewers often ask a set of standard questions to gauge a candidate's skills, experiences, and preparedness for the role. These questions can be broadly categorized into introductory, behavioral, and situational questions. Find below some most likely questions that interviewers ask the applicants seeking for job opportunities:

Question 1: "Tell me about yourself." 

Answer: The candidate should endeavour to make his/ her answers brief and professional, highlighting his/ her relevant experiences and skills. This question is often used as an icebreaker, and the interviewer wants to get a vivid overview of the job seeker's background, skills, and experiences. Applicant should mention his/ her current job title (if any), relevant skills, and why he/ she is interested in the position applied for.

Question 2: "What are your strengths and weaknesses?"

Answer: When discussing your strengths, ensure that you highlight specific skills or accomplishments that align with the job requirements. You can answer, "In my previous role, I successfully led a team project which resulted in sales increase and customers' satisfaction." For weaknesses, choose an area where you are actively improving and demonstrate self-awareness. For example, you might say," I've been working on improving my public speaking skills, and I've been taking courses to enhance my presentation abilities."

Question 3: "Where do you want to see yourself in five years time from now?"

Answer: Some common interview questions focus on job seekers' goals and motivation. The above question succinctly requires candidate to provide general ideas about the skills he/ she wants to develop and the roles he/ she would be in. The interviewer wants to know if the interviewee is interested in growing or not. Hence, the interviewee can answer," I'm excited to develop my leadership skills and take on more responsibilities, potentially moving into a managerial role within the next five years." 

Question 4: "How do you prioritize your work?" Or "Can you describe a time when you disagreed with your supervisor or manager?" 

Answer: Candidates should remember that this type of question requires a specific examples from their past experiences, demonstrating their abilities to handle challenges or conflicts. When answering this question, use the STAR (situation, task, action, result) method to structure your answer, highlighting the situation, task, action, and result. 

Question 5: "What are your salary expectations?"

Answer: A salary-related question like this requires research on typical compensation ranges for the role. Your suitable answer should be, "Based on industry standards, I expect a salary between $40, 000 and $50, 000. But, I'm flexible depending on the company's benefits and culture." 

Question 6: "Give an example of a time when you had to respond to an unhappy and fault-finding customer."

Answer: Note that this is a behavioral question which seems to access your interpersonal skills and ability to handle difficult situations. When answering this question, candidly focus on the steps you took to resolve the issue and positive outcomes. 

Question 7: "Why should our company hire you?" Or "Why do you want to work for this company?"

Answer: The candidate should show his/ her knowledge of the company's mission and values, and explain how they align with his/ her own goals, interests, and passions. You must have an in-depth information about the company before going for the interview. If not, you would not be able to answer this question correctly and convincingly.  

Question 8: "How do you handle feedback and criticism?"

Answer: Convince the interviewer that you are open to constructive feedback and willing to learn from it. 

Question 9: "Describe a time when you overcame a difficult challenge."

Answer: Use specific examples to demonstrate your problem-solving skills and resilience.

Question 10: "How do you plan to achieve your career goals?"

Answer: Clearly describe your strategies for developing new skills and taking on new challenges.

Question 11: "What do you know about our company''s (organization's) culture?"  

Answer: Explain your understanding of the company's mission, values, and work environment and how they align with your interests and passions. 

Question 12: "How would you contribute to our team?"

Answer: Clearly highlight your relevant skills and experiences, and explain how you would use it for the company's growth and expansion. Tell the interviewer that you are able to fit in with the team.

Question 13: "Why did you leave your last job?"

Answer: Be very honest, but keep your answer positive and brief. You might say," I left my previous job to take care of a family health matter, but now I'm eager to return to work in a role where I can utilize my skills and experiences."

Question 14: "How do you prioritize your work?"

Answer: Explain your approach to managing tasks, such as using to-do lists, setting deadlines, or focusing on high-priority tasks. Provide an example of a time when you effectively prioritized your work. For example, the job seeker may answer, "I use a task management tool to track my deadlines and focus on the most critical tasks first."

Question 15: "What are your interests and passions?"

Answer: You must showcase your enthusiasm for the industry or role, and highlight any relevant hobby or interest. This can demonstrate your motivation and engagement.

Question 16: " What is your preferred work environment?"

Answer: Be honest about your preferences, but also show flexibility. You might say, "I thrive in a collaborative environment, but I'm also comfortable working independently when needed."

Question 17: "Do you have leadership experience?"

Answer: Share specific examples of leadership roles or experiences, and highlight your skills and accomplishments. If you are new to leadership, mention instances where you took initiative or led a team project.

Question 18: "Tell me about a time you had to quickly adjust your priorities to meet changing demands."

Answer: The interviewee should clearly describe the situation, the actions taken by him/ her, and the outcome.

Question 19: "Describe a situation where you had to collaborate with a difficult and implacable co-worker."

Answer: Tell the interviewer how you managed the toxic co-worker with maturity and maintained a positive working relationship in order to achieve the company's set goals. 

Question 20: "Tell me about a time you failed in your engagement."

Answer: The interviewer wants to know more about your problem-solving skills and how determined you are after failure. Tell the interviewer that you did not relent or give up on your target after the failure. Rather, the failure became your launch pad to press forward for success. Let him/ her know that you learnt from the experience and improved on it instead of being discouraged.

Question 21: "How would you handle a difficult customer?"

Answer: When the interviewee asks you this question, he has something in his mind. He still wants to know about your problem-solving skills and behaviour in the times of distress. He wants to know if you will get offended and begin to fight the customers verbally or physically. Show him/ her that you are not temperamental or easily provoked. Let the interviewee understand that you can be calm under pressure and criticism.  

Question 22: "What would you do if you are faced with complex problem in your working place?"

Answer: This question demands that you show that you possess analytical skills and approach to solving complex issues.

Question 23: "What are your long-term career goals?"

Answer: Outline your aspirations and how they align with the company's vision and values. 

Question 24: "Do you have any question (s) you want to ask me?"

Answer: The candidate should say "Yes." to this question and ask thoughtful and intelligible questions. The candidate can prepare for the question he/ she wants to ask the interviewee before the interview ends. An intelligent question will boost the candidate's chance of getting the job because it shows interest in the company and the role. The candidate may say, "What are the biggest challenges facing the team or company right now, and how do you want to solve it?" This intelligent question would make the interviewer understand that the candidate truly knows what he/ she is doing.

In conclusion, mastering common interview questions and practising thoughtful responses can significantly enhance job seeker's chance of acing an interview and landing his/ her desired job. By understanding the types of questions asked and preparing accordingly, job seeker will be well-equipped to showcase his/ her skills, experiences, and ability for the role.
